Perfect Is Boring

Do you ever have times in life where you just think, oh no not again? Let me tell you life is full of this. You had a long stressful day at work, you sit in traffic on your way home sweating bullets because the AC stopped working right in the middle of summer. You get home and the dogs tore up the trash and spread it all over the house. You go to clean it up and you realized that you forgot to pick up more trash bags at the store, so you try to pick it up with your hands. In the process you get mustard all over your brand new shirt. You take your shirt off to get in the washer as soon as you can and remember that you forgot to pay the water bill so they shut it off. Anyone had days like this?

Days like this make you wish sometimes that life was perfect. But what would a perfect life be like? Now I’m not talking about what would have happened if Adam and Eve wouldn’t have eaten the fruit. I’m talking about our personal life. If everything went our way all the time what would life be like? Would we know what it’s like to need, or to want. If everything was easy would we know what it’s like to persevere. If everything went our way we could have any job we wanted, making any amount of money we wanted, drive any car we wanted, own any house we wanted anywhere we wanted. Sound good?

A lot of us are probably thinking, “Yeah I’ll take all of that”. But would we know God? Would we know what it’s like to have to get down on our knees and pray and ask God to help us get through the hard times?  The Bible wouldn’t be full of encouragement to help us get through these times. We wouldn’t have some of the relationships in life that we have today…..where there were people there for us to lean on and helped create a bond between friends. But most importantly, would we think that don’t even need God?

Life would be boring. Without struggles we wouldn’t become stronger, never an urge to learn, never know what it’s like to be tested. Take a minute to think about a time in your life where everything was great. Where you didn’t have a worry in the world. Now how close were you to God in this time? How much did you praise Him every minute, and thank Him for all he has given you? Are you as close to God when everything is going perfect? This is why we need for life NOT to be perfect. This is why we need to struggle. When we struggle it brings us closer to God.

Psalms 62:6 HE ONLY is my rock and my salvation; HE is my defence and my fortress; I shall not be moved.

If life were perfect we wouldn’t need  HIM.

If you look at the story of Job it tells us that he was a true man of God. In chapter 1 verse 1-3 it tells us: This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred oxen, five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the east. Job had it all going for him.

Then that old devil came in verse 6: One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you came from?” Satan answered, “I’ve been roaming around the earth and going back and forth in it.” The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

So the devil shows up with some angels one day and God said, “where you been Devil”? The Devil says “Oh, just wondering around”.

God says “You check out my boy Job? This ol’ boy’s ten foot tall and bullet proof”.

The devil starts whining, “Yeah but that’s not fair….you’re protecting him. I bet if you strike down everything he’s got he’ll curse you”.

God says “Alright, well, I’ll tell you what, everything my he’s got you can take, but don’t you touch him”.

So Job and his sons and daughters were having a feast and drinking some wine when a messenger came. “Job we’ve been attacked and they carried off all the donkeys and oxen, then killed some of your servants”. Before he finished another came in, “Job fire fell from the sky, burned up your sheep and more of your servants”. Before he finished yet another showed up yelling “Someone came and stole all your camels and killed even more of your servants”. Before he finished a fourth messenger showed up saying, “Job your sons and daughters were feasting when a big wind came from the desert and destroyed the house and i was the only one to survive”.

So in verse 20 it says: At this Job stood up tore his robe and shaved his head then fell to the ground in worship. He said: “Naked I have come from my mothers womb and naked shall I depart. The Lord gave and the Lord take away; may the name of the Lord be praised”. Now how many of us could have all this happen and still say “Praise God”. Then it says he still didn’t charge God with any wrong doing. I don’t know about ya’ll but i’d be a lil’ salty.

But that’s not all…..the devil comes back to God again and says, “Well it’s still not fair…..you need to let me have at his body”.

God says “Alright do what you want but don’t kill him”.

So the devil puts sores all over Jobs body, and Job says “oh yeah” and takes a piece of broken pottery scrapes his skin off and sits among the ashes.

Even his wife is saying, you fool! Curse God and die!

Job says, “Nope, just hush now, why should we take the good from God and not the bad”. In all this Job still did not sin in what he said.

We think we have it bad? look what this guy went through! Still Praising God. Job had all he needed and it was all taken from him.

Like Job, sometimes today when everything seems perfect, then life can set in. This is the time we need to rejoice. This is what brings us closer to God, this is when we should stand up and say, “I shall not be moved! He is my rock and my salvation, He is my defence and my fortress!”

Embrace the imperfections of life……perfect will not make you stronger.

Perfect is boring.
